Wallingford Blog = WALLBLOG

By Bill

Over the last few days a few of you have noticed the discrete BLOG link in the header. I started writing it but I wanted to build up the content a little before I made a larger announcement. I am going to start putting the newsey/chatty stuff there that we have been putting on this page.

There is still work to do on the layout. I am trying to figure out how to get the sidebars the way I want them, for instance, but it's fun. I like the blog format (Wordpress, in this case) because I don't have to worry about layout and organization. The tags and categories let the reader pull any information thread and everything attached comes right out.

I'm not sure what we'll do with this opening page. I don't want the wall to wall advertising that you see on so many sites. But we'll go along for a while and something will suggest itself.

Meanwhile, one of the beauties of the blog format is the conversational nature. Feel free to contribute a comment. I would like to see what you have to say. Right now I am asking for your inflated Schwalbe tire measurements to add to the handful that I have collected.

7/24 update: We have the bags and the prices. I am slow to get them on the website. (We are pretty busy right now.) The 'May' saddlebag will cost $201. The 'Retro' frontbag will cost $398. The webpage for the saddlebag is up but you cannot order online. The webpage for the frontbag is up also.

GUU-WATANABE Bags

Here is a picture of our first shipment of Guu-watanabe bags, still in Tokyo. We ordered a handlebar bag x5 and a saddle bag x4. We weren't sure what to get but the handlebar bag is tested in the current Bicycle Quarterly.

(on the GUU website: frontbag retro, saddlebag may)

This is a test-the-waters order. If there is a market I will carry more variety. These are very nice people to work with.

The bags are leaving Tokyo today via (I-hope-more-reliable-than-DHL, see Zwei below) UPS.

An account of the mountain stages and final time trial that ended the1954 fiftieth-anniversary Tour de France was published in the August 5th, 1954 edition of "Cycling" magazine. Louison Bobet won convincingly after a very strong ride."It was literally a fury of speed"

What Would the Bike of AD 2000 Look Like?

Y2K saddle

In 1954 Britain's "Cycling Weekly" asked their readers what they thought the bicycle would look like in the year 2000. We came across the 2nd installment of this article recently and thought it was pretty interesting. Some of the predictors had a pretty accurate crystal ball; "Mass produced frames will be electrically welded but craftsman-specialists will still build bicycles. . . .by hand, to the requirements of the conniseur." Some missed the mark pretty wide; Tyres "will be made of plastic and filled with a Latex foam compound so that punctures will cease to exist."We have reproduced this two page article in PDF format for those of you who are interested. If you would like to see more of these historical articles let us know. Now. . . if we could only find that March 18th, 1954 issue that has the first part of this article.

worthy causes but they don't fit our criteria.
