Proofide Changesa Wallbike history of the Proofide tin over the last few years |
![]() |
When I started dealing in Brooks saddles in 1996 Proofide was coming in (1). The lid was pressed on. After a year or two we started getting (2), a flatter tin with a screw on lid. The Proofide in this tin had a red tint. (2) just lasted for a little while and then it was back to (1). Proofide color was back to the basic yellowish tint. I consider this the "standard" Proofide tin thru 2001. One day we opened a shipment and found a plastic 'tin' (3). We were told that Brooks wanted to update a little. About this time Selle Royale bought Brooks and we were told that the new owners wanted a more traditional (i.e. metal) Proofide container. Pretty quickly we were getting (4). This looks to us like they ran out of the printed black plastic container but didn't have the new ones ready so they stuck a label on some blank black plastic 'tins'. (4) was quickly supplanted by (5). Another make-do until (6) was ready. We believe that (1) and (6) are the old and new standard Proofide containers. The chronology presented here is arrived at by the way the Proofide came to us at wallbike.com. It could be that the various containers were in other supply chains at different times. We welcome any facts or observations that might make this a more complete exhibit. Pre 1996 Proofide containers would also be welcome to extend the record. The evolution from (3) to (6) happened in 2002 and 2003.

Jeff Noakes sent along this picture of an older Proofide tin. "MINIMUM NETT WEIGHT 2 oz." it says on the side. |
